Deb, I know you must be very proud of your son. He is lucky to have parents like you and your husband.

Getting back to this thread -- My mom sews extremely well. She made all of our clothes until I was a teen (being the youngest of three). She doesn't sew that much anymore. I can sew, but only at the simplest levels. The spinning wheel on the porch (as posted previously) transported me to a better place. Thanks.

I'd say you are already doing a great job, and you should be proud. Your son sounds a lot like mine.

Here's the other side of the coin. He was born knowing how to do things I can't. His first crayon rapidly lead to a whole house full of art supplies. I gave him his first camera at age 4, when he "borrowed" mine once too often. He was a yearbook photographer for all 4 years in high school, and has since sold some of his more recent work. He's designed party invitations and restaurant menus. I bought guitars and drums from pawnshops for years. He still plays for fun, and he's a part time DJ. He just finished building a light table so he can screen print t-shirts with his own artwork.

In those cases, as he learned, all I did was pay the bills, and stay out of his way

WOW!! I know that my father always saw it as his responsibility to help my sisters and I find the talents that we came here with. We were pretty tight for cash growing up but he was cool with us trying pretty much any class/lesson we wanted to discover interests and talents. I have many friends who's parents didn't seem to think of those things at all, and as a result they found their way into adulthood without really knowing their own strengths. It seems that you really foster an environment of experimentation and growth in your home. I respect that quite a bit

Well I want to be in the silo that you and your mom are in then! Decades of overalls will get boring, I'm gonna need somebody to sew a cape on mine or something!

My mom always says that kids need capes, I noticed the other day that she gave one of my childhood capes to my three year old nephew, made my heart sing to see her little hand stitches on that beloved old dracula cape.

In addtion to spinning, I vote you learn to preserve food if you don't already know how. Nothing like that little ping ping ping of jars sealing to bighten your day.

Oh, good call on the preserves. That's another thing my mother used to do (she still does actually, but less that she did when she was feeding four kids! haha). I really need to have her teach my wife and I some of these great skills! Thanks for the idea!

For myself, I wouldn't call it creative. I'll try anything that I think is interesting as long as I have clear instructions and can afford the materials. And have space to work with the materials. Some things have worked out, some not.

I'm knitting - again. This is about my fifth stab at learning it. I've never done more than a scarf before now. I keep going back to it because I do like it. For this period of time, it's just right for me, so I intend to stick with it and learn. I'm working on my first baby blanket now.

You can do anything you want, you know.
