I have three questions:

1. Am I missing how to upload an avatar? ETA: It's been enabled now. Yay!
2. Is there a /spoiler (or BBCode style [spoiler]) that can be enabled?
(which leads me to)
3. Are spoilers okay in book discussions, or should they be kept to individual threads, etc.?

I haven't found out how to upload an avatar yet, either.

So far, most people either put [spoiler] in the title of the post, or have just assumed you've read the book being discussed.

Go to your own profile and select "edit", then there's an "upload photo" link, on the left, I think. I tried to do that, but all my pics are the wrong size, too big. It has to be 100 x 100, and I have no clue how to do that. Guess I don't have the right program for it. All my photos are digital.

That's for your profile picture (which I was able to do). I know how to create an avatar, but there is no option to upload one. This is what happens when you click on the Avatar link:

No Avatar Specified
Avatars are small graphics that are displayed under your username whenever you post.
(checkbox here) Do not use an avatar
Note: if you have a custom avatar selecting this option will delete it.

It looks as if the upload custom avatar feature hasn't yet been enabled.

I see what you mean, tink. It was the profile pic I checked out, not the avatar.

I have a new question. Is there an option in Settings that allows you to jump to the last read post of a thread when you click on the thread link?

If there are unread posts in the thread, there'll be a small icon just in front of the title... Click that and it takes you to the first unread post. Is that what you're after?
