    MOAR! (potential spoilers?)

Ok, the title is a little forceful, but what I want to say is that there's room here for more books or even a host of short stories. I would love to hear more about other colonies. I was thinking the other day about a book that starts something like this:

Location: Sol Solar System, Gamma Planet
    Year: ~30,000 BC

A tiger lifts his head from his meal to watch as a glowing ball streaks across the sky and lands peacefully in an open field. A large door opens and a single tractor rumbles out to begin clearing land...

I want to know what happens when the head honchos locate Porter's colony. You know they will. There's profit at stake.

You should write that story. But explain the time travel first!

This is the one issue that niggles at me re: HWH. At the outset, I grant this: this was a *highly* unusual situation, one very unlikely to happen again. Even so, what we're left with is a group of colonists who are directed to actions that ultimately will benefit "the funders" and leave the colonists themselves dead, all orchestrated by an AI. The colonists thwart this plan and send this "letter" (that is the book) back to the funders. What do you think they're going to do with it? They're going to dissect it a hundred ways from hell and back and devise new safeguards and protocols to further decrease the likelihood that colonists might *ever* act in a way that negatively influences the bottom line.

I agree with your point. I wonder as well, taking a circuitous route home, how long will it take the golden rocket to get back to the funders? It took over a century for the colony to arrive at it's destination going straight there. Taking the long way home will take much more time, five hundred years? a thousand years? more? By that time who knows what it'll encounter. The world could have destroyed itself by then, could have advanced well beyond the ability to use the outdated technology (like V-Ger in Star Trek 1 using radio primitive waves). It would be interesting for Hugh to write that chapter and tell us what happens

I've totally got Deb's back on this one, I also vote you write the story you started there! HWH seems ripe with fan fic possiblities.

Correct me if I'm wrong -- I noticed this when I was reading and it confused me, but I just let it go. But check your copies and see what you think. I have a Kindle Fire- don't know if that makes a difference.
