Just got lucky. Sometimes I pay attention when I read! Maybe I could be a beta reader for Hugh's next book -- or is catching that kind of stuff more the job of an editor?

Can someone answer a question about half way home for me?

I was bothered about the use of a rocket, cobbled together from burnt wiring and gold alloy. Was there an explanation given on how this rocket would communicate the findings of Colony across interstellar distances? I am wondering if I missed mention of something in orbit that had communications capabilities that the rocket would link up with.

I just assumed that the details would be handled by AI. I imagined that the rocket would be sent somewhere toward the planet of origin and then accessed from there.

Same here, I assume that Colony had some hand in it, likely even programmed a circuit board for it or something that the people building it didn't know much about except where to install it :/ Damn, damn, Colony.

The gist of my question is how was a rocket, made with scrap parts, expected to travel intersteller distances. Colony traveled with slow seed-ship sub light - or at least that was my understanding of the principle behind the whole corporate expansionist deal. A chemical rocket made of cobbled parts would take eons to alert colony's corp headquarters of what they found - specifically could not broadcast the information as a competing corp might pick it up.

I just think I was missing something because Hugh is so tight on every other detail.

I doesn't have to get thier fast...but it would be many generations of survivors later, so much so that it wouldn't have been an issue to them if the rocket had been launched or not with its initial data. By the time anything came back the survivors could go from stone age to supra-light drive tech - it all comes down to the mechanism of the rockets propulsion and I missed any discussion of that in the course of the book.
