I enjoyed it as well. I thought it was very cleverly done. Also

while the twist was very predictable -- purposefully so, it seems -- we still felt for him given his emotional reaction to his own virtual loss, so the twist's predictability wasn't an issue. And the reason for the twist wasn't nearly as predictable to me, and I really enjoyed that.

Yes, while it became clear what the twist was going to be, it was well done even though you could see it coming. Kind of like a horror movie where you see the bad guy behind the good guy. You know what's coming, but it can still make you squirm.

Exactly! I especially loved the section where they were discussing "pixelated" appearances. Such a great moment and very well done.

I thought it was a novel! I was quite enjoying the story, which ended all too
suddenly!
