Season 2 Finale!

I’ve seen hundreds of reactions to the season 2 finale, and they basically go like this:

Book readers: “OMG, mind blown!”

Non-book readers: “Who sat on the remote?!”

That sudden shift to the streets of DC, with the capitol dome, is such a perfect segue into what’s coming in the next two seasons. But don’t worry … just as season 2 flipped between the events of Silo 17 and 18, seasons 3 and 4 will take us from the near-future events that lead to the silo project, and what’s happening to the cast we’ve come to know and love the past two seasons.

It’s been a blast watching everyone’s reactions to the show, especially those who have read the books. Much of our misdirection this season has been with readers in mind. You think we’re taking a character in a direction they would never go (Lukas, Walker, Solo), only to bring them back in line with the novel. This and other changes keep even me guessing sometimes, and I’ve read the scripts and seen the show already! Still, I would find myself thinking, “This can’t be right…” only for the show to bring all the players back to their natural places.

It’s been a wild ride, and we’re only halfway through! Season 3 is filming as we speak (the dailies look amazing, the chemistry with the new cast members is off the charts), and season 4 is written and ready to go. You should see a shorter wait between seasons than we had between 1 and 2 (because of the writers’ strike). In the meantime, the books are selling like gangbusters as new viewers dive in to get answers ahead of time.

Looking forward to starting the next chapter in this adventure with you all. And for anyone who is just starting to watch, you lucky ducks don’t have to suffer the week-long wait between episodes, and for that we envy you.

  1. Thank you for being such an integral part of this masterpiece!

  2. The blood drained out of my face when it flipped scenes and I couldn’t move—awesome time/space travel to set up SHIFT. @hughhowey has created multiple worlds that are easy to get immersed in. Loved the completely different but exactly the same ending in 18.

  3. Your show is the sole reason I have a subscription to Apple TV+. Thanks to everyone for making it all so real.

I really appreciate all the wrenches you guys have thrown in to make it fun for book readers. A 1:1 adaptation would have been cool, but it wouldn’t have been nearly as exciting to watch unfold.

  5. Hugh,
Your opening comments made me laugh out loud. At least the PEZ duck, which is now reselling for extravagant prices on Etsy, helped non-book readers make a connection and stop berating their dog for changing the channel.

Well done and we are all counting the minutes till S3 release. Please lean on the editors to speed things up!

Why do the scenes have to be shot so dark? I mean, okay, I know that most of the show takes place in a silo, but why does the lighting have to be so bad? Often, I can barely see who is on the screen or what they’re doing. It’s abominable.

You can make a quick adjustment in your TV settings, use vivid or bright and it will be fine.

  7. Have you updated the technology in the series compared to the books? The first book was released 13 years ago so it would make sense to update the technology in the series. And I don’t remember any AI in the book 🙂

Hugh, It’s honestly a thrill to watch the visual version of your SILO come into my screen here in Akumal Mexico. Thanks for the inside update. Mutual fiied – Russell Blake.

  9. You totally described how season 2 played out in our house! I read the books (between season 1 and 2) and my husband hasn’t. I finished the entire series the week before season 2 started… and while I tried really hard not to spoil things for my husband, it was really hard with the gasps and wait-a-minute moments. I literally started cheering like someone scored a touchdown when I saw the Capitol building. Thanks for making this series so engaging for readers and non-readers alike.

PS: What sold me on the books was Solo and Shadow. It so accurately captured everything (I don’t want to spoil it for others, so I’m keeping it vague).

    1. We have a (rescue) black cat named Friday. If she hadn’t already had a name, it would be Shadow…

    2. I am so brokenhearted about Elise not being in the show

  10. Fantastic job by all involved. Loved this season, and looking forward to Season 3.

Me too! I subscribed to Apple tv just because of Silo! After reading the books, I couldn’t wait! Now season 3 and 4!! Apple tv will have so many subscribers because of this series!!!

  11. Hi I read all 3 books. I noticed that S1 ended before the events in book 1 were completed. Since there are 4 seasons I assume you need 4 to complete the 3 books?

  12. Loving every bit of it, Hugh. Congrats on the success of the show and your vision. You definitely deserve every bit of this amazing ride

  13. It’s on TV?! I loved your books and have digital copies on my old Amazon tablet. Did not know they were made into a series. I don’t subscribe to Apple T.V., and probably never will, darn it. But I’m so happy for you, Mr.Howey! Well done!

If I were you, I would subscribe, just to watch this series, then unsubscribe!!!!???

    2. Agreed. The Apple TV series really brings the books to life. The show is a must watch!

  14. Wow, what a rollercoaster of a finale! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. The twist with the artifact was mind-blowing, and it felt like such a perfect nod to the fans who’ve been paying attention since Season 1. Hugh, your ability to bring such depth to this world is unmatched. I can’t wait to see how the story evolves in Season 3. Thank you to everyone who made this show a reality!

  15. I loved the books , loved the tv series, the Silo is just like I imagined it when I was reading the books.
I’m just at the end of series 2 , where Juliette Comes back to to the Silo.
Cant wait for what’s to come.

  16. Oh Hugh… come on…
This series is terrible. I lasted for 4 episodes and now it’s in my DNF list.
I managed to suspend my disbelief when Juliette found that the 2nd silo, w/ everyone dead for years and years still had power. Really?

And then, she’s swimming underwater, while underground, and yet there’s enough light for her to make her way through? Really?

But the coup de grace was the scene where the Mayor was assassinated:
“Yeah, I poisoned your dinner. Hey, let’s slap on this Oculus and you can watch a video as you die!” That didn’t work in Soylent Green, and it doesn’t work now.

I read WOOL back in the day when you were selling copies burned on a flash card inside a holder that had a radiation sign on it. Back in the Kboards days, man… The series was OK; better than most of the Apocalyptic dreck out there at the time.

But this series mangled your books. I’m not sure, but I THINK this adaptation is on par in terms of terribleness as that LOTR adaptation on Prime.

Oh well, you got your money. I’m not blaming you for this disaster, man; I hope that they gave you a boatload, b/c I’d be surprised if you see a bump in sales of WOOL from this show. I hope you do, but I can’t see it happening.

Wow, tell us what you really think.

    2. Can’t please everyone that’s for sure. It will be good for you to have a break before S3 is release hopefully at the end of the year. Then you can decide if you want any of your questions answered.

    3. You sound like a low IQ individual.

Had you read all of the books before your silly little tantrum of a tirade, you’d be able answer your own stupid questions.

You live a sad life. Stay angry and it will always be garbage like it clearly is now.

      Dang son…?

      1. I hate to think of what he thinks about I Zombie I mean, I can suspend my disbelief but Zombies who can think and feel remorse while noshing on the guts of a neighbour? hehe (I’m being sarcastic)…One might as well hate all space movies where there’s a sound of an explosion in space…like THAT could possibly happen…sheesh…Or that a little girl could hold on to a railing while the much bigger monster is being suck outside into space because the escape hatch door is open… A Flaw? perhaps… but don’t let it ruin the rest of it (e.g., in the book Solo has literally overflowing buckets of his own feces everywhere – but does Juliette hold her nose when she enters his room for the first time? come on!!!

    5. Just gonna say there’s still limits to what can be presented in 2 dimensions, with…. at best… surround sound. Darling, if you want reality, I’d suggest putting down the screens and going outside.

Or maybe you relate to Silo a little TOO much.

Right? Totally mind blown here! Such a fabulous episode. Juliette coming over the hill was a leap up and cheer moment for me.

  19. Just watched the last of s2, and really enjoyed it. Nice to see the characters revert to the story, and final scene intro to S3 was great. Hoping it comes soon!

  20. I started reading the Silo trilogy a little bit before the TV series started, so I had already read Wool before the first season and had read all the books before the second season began. It was funny talking to a work colleague who also loves the book and the series before the season 2 finale, where I told her how I hoped the last episode would finish. Imagine my surprise when that’s exactly how it ended with the “who sat on the remote” part. Haha….superb. Delighted to hear you’re working on more silo books and I saw that Sand is being made into a TV series, assuming that’s still happening, I think that will be by next read and look forward to exploring more of your books. Thanks for all the great enjoyment you have given us :)

I read the books a few years ago then looked forward to the tv series. Enjoying the mind games of where the book went (Wool) and where the screen writers went and was pleasantly surprised how well they played together. The visualization in my mind was reflected in the sets. Except Walker was a man in the books. I’ve decided to reread the books to get the subtleties and revisualize the dark and the hope.

  23. We think that the story of Silo is a great concept, but there are so many continuity errors it is like a sieve. There is NO WAY the Silo’s infrastructure could sustain it at all. EVERYTHING would fail over time as they had no means to repair and replace equipment that failed over time. Computers and screens , hard drives, lighting systems, cabling etc etc all have a MTBF lifecycle. They would need entire factories to replace CPU’s ,GPU’s , LED’s logicboards, lenses for cameras etc etc . Wood, steel, plastic would all break down, door hinges, stressloaded cables, pressure seals on hydraulic systems , impellers on pumps etc all would fail over time and the population of 10,000 would quickly break down everything. In the Series, the Silo’s are shown as being built close together. This would NEVER happen IRL as the displacement isostacy of such structures would lead to substrata failures and the collapse of the Silo’s. Also the Silo’s being so close together would render communication difficult and there is no way that one Silo would not know of the other being so close due to operation of machinery vibrating etc. Assuming that the power generation would be via nuclear power, the processing of nuclear waste from spent fuel rods etc is not considered. We can go on and on in regards to the environmental issues for months. The so called “gas solution” for Uprisings would never happen, the Silo’s inhabitants would have long ago discovered such a system meant to kill them all, and gas breaks down over time as all chemical substances do, so it would be totally ineffective after a hundred year or so. The List goes on. However the Series is interesting from a Social environmental p,o,v, and that is more interesting than the failures of realism.

  25. While the fundamental story – people living in an underground spiral bunker for mysterious but sinister reasons – is the same in the TV series and the books, there are big differences in the detail. And the very end of season 2 suggests this will be so for the rest of the story. But that means the TV series and books are separate and equally enjoyable experience. Like many, I didn’t read the books until after season 2 ended and would heartily recommend them to fans.

  26. Season 2 ending was exactly what I had pictured! There needed to be a flashback at some point! The pacing was a bit slow, but it worked. The next two seasons are going to be jam packed. For the nonreaders, you are in for a wild ride! I can’t wait to see how Season 3 plays out.

After finishing Season 2, I used a scene in the last episode as an example in my Critical Thinking course (I’m a Philosophy Professor and love using pop culture in my classes and often I’m honored to get pop culture creators to do virtual Q and A’s with the students.) Anyhoo, I told the students I wouldn’t name the show or give away anything but when I started to describe the scene (between Knox and Martha who are communicating knowing that they are being watched) one of my students literally bounced up and down with excitement because she knew exactly what I was talking about…It was so cute. So at least one of the students has a better understanding of the concept I was trying to explain…haha! I have to say however, I just finished reading Shift – and I found it so depressing! no joy, no happiness, no friendships, lots of men sobbing even…and yet, I couldn’t stop reading but sheesh!…I’m now onto Dust and things seem hopeful again…(as far as one can use that term with this series.)

  29. Back in May 2012 I wrote you an email after finishing the Wool Omnibus (Kindle Edition).
    At the time I commented:
“If one day this book turns into a movie, please dont let it be a rotten one. :)”

Well, it did not end up as a movie after all but as a great TV Series.
I think in the end it was a better option, it allows for a much better experience overall.
Congrats once more for the success of the books and the series, it’s been a very pleasurable ride.

  30. I am one of the “viewers dive in to get answers ahead of time.”

    Thanks for the amazing story.

  31. I wrote a song for SILO called “Before We Had to Lie”
