    KDP is for Chumps

I have a confession to make: I’ve been a chump. When it comes to writing, I’ve been a major chump. Webster says that a chump is someone who is foolish or easily deceived. That’s been me as a writer. For 90% of my life as a writer, I’ve been a chump. Time to come clean.… Continue reading

Wayfinder Build: Part 2 – The Hull

Wayfinder Build: Part 2 – The Hull

No two St. Francis 50s are alike. Not only are they tweaked to the specifications of each owner, the builder makes their own refinements with every hull. Duncan and George spend a lot of time on the boats they build — sailing them, using them, owning them. They love their boats, but they are never satisfied. Each… Continue reading

    A Life at Sea

I just spent a week aboard the sister ship to my future catamaran. This was hull #18 of the St. Francis 50 line. I helped sail the boat to the Miami Boat Show a few weeks ago, where I put a deposit down on hull #19. The next day, a lovely couple purchased Guinevere, the boat… Continue reading

Wayfinder Build: Part 1 – The Design

There is no such thing as a perfect boat. Every choice is a compromise. What I love about the St. Francis is that you even have choices. These are semi-custom boats, in that the hull molds are reused and structural bulkheads can’t be changed, but everything else is up to you and what you are willing… Continue reading

    The St. Francis 50

    The St. Francis 50

Three different boat shows. Countless hours on websites. A flood of emails from boat builders, calls from brokers, visits to yards where various catamarans are manufactured. And we kept coming back to the same boat, over and over. There is no such thing as a perfect boat. Each model has a feature you love and is missing… Continue reading

Just when I thought this sunset sail couldn't get any better... Anchored off the most beautiful beach in Martinique for a few nights. Set up camp on the sand for the day. Absolute paradise. This is our favorite anchorage in Martinique. Never seen another boat here, just tons of wildlife. Lots of birds, the best coral in the Caribbean, and sea critters galore. Just today we swam with rays, turtles, eels, and dozens of species of fish. Right from the boat! I grew up on a farm in North Carolina reading physics books from the local library, wishing I had someone, anyone, to talk to about the wild universe we inhabit. The best thing to come from my sci-fi career is that I get to surround myself with like-minded, curious people. Dinner with a few friends... Life gets easy when you find your person.
