Beacon 23 Release Date!

Big news for Beacon fans! The TV adaptation lands on November 12th, less than two months from now! It will premiere on MGM+, which is owned by Amazon, so I suspect it’ll be an add-on to your Prime account. I know, I know, someone should invent cable and bundle these things together…

Starring Stephan James and Lena Heady, Beacon 23 tells the story of a lighthouse operator in outer space. There are two seasons filmed. The first season was created and showrun by Zak Penn. The cast, crew, and sets were absolutely epic. Can’t wait to share the story with you all!

    Show…I became signed up with MGM+ 5.99 a month…I like it…

  7. Having watched Season 1 and two episodes of Season 2; one needs to understand how this show differs from the novel.

The show writers have taken the Beacon 23 novel and crafted a universe based on the novel. This allows them to create new stories set in the same style as the novel. Shifting timelines showing different Beacon 23 operators and stories.

If you are expecting the show to match the novel, you will be disappointed. The first few episodes start in appearance to follow some of the novel only to stray considerably as you progress. Adapting a novel to a movie or series is always tricky. What works in the written word doesn’t translate directly to the screen. For example, internal narrative thoughts and dialog. That would require breaking the 4th wall which is normally considered taboo on the screen. Despite some shows and movies successful use of the 4th wall, it doesn’t work so well if it is over done. Much of the Beacon 23 novel takes place as internal thoughts and dialog by a lone operator. That would be quite ineffective on screen.

I found it jarring at first, but then I let go of my Beacon 23 preconceptions and stuck with it. It is a good show but it’s not the novel. The novel stands on its own as a great story.
