ICE Kills More Americans than Illegal Immigrants

I posted the above on Threads, and some folks questioned whether this could actually be true. So let me run you through the math. Granted, some of these numbers are best estimates. Undercounting is probably happening on both sides of the argument. But when you see how outlandishly far apart the outcome is, you’ll realize that the statement is absolutely true.

Estimates of the number of illegal immigrants in the United States is roughly 14 million, by Pew, in 2023. Or 16 million by CIS in 2025. A Cato analysis of murders by undocumented immigrants in Texas found 473 convictions between 2013 and 2022. The same study calculated 2.2 convictions per 100,000 undocumented immigrants per year, using total population as a denominator. (Compare that to 3.0 for U.S.-born residents.) We’ve long known that Americans are more deadly than illegal immigrants, but what about comparing to ICE agents?

The Cato study looked at a roughly ten year period in Texas. Extrapolating to the overall US population of undocumented immigrants, you get roughly 300 convicted murders per year. That sounds like a lot, right?! Enough to get really angry and be a full-time racist on social media and at every Thanksgiving dinner. Almost enough to ignore the fact that Americans born in the United States kill far more than this every year. Keep in mind that 14-16 million people is a far bigger number than the number of ICE agents walking around with masks and guns. We are looking at whether a single ICE agent is more dangerous than a single illegal immigrant. Who is more likely to kill you?

In January of 2026, ICE had grown to about 22,000 staff. That’s all staff, not just armed enforcement. There are two ways that giving this number is a benefit to ICE and works against my thesis (I try to do that with every number selected, to give the counter-argument as much power here as possible. You’ll see that it doesn’t dent my thesis one bit). One way this helps the pro-ICE argument is that total staff undercounts how dangerous the enforcement arm has become. It also inflates the numbers by going with the rapidly growing and recent estimate, which highlights how much more dangerous ICE was in previous years on a per-capita basis.

I should also point out here that similar enforcement under Biden and Obama also resulted in unnecessary deaths. This isn’t an anti-Trump rant. I don’t wear pictures of Biden or Obama or fly flags with their faces on them. I don’t belong to a cult, and if you’re in one, it’s hard to imagine that other people aren’t. This is a rant against racism, against treating civil violations as felonies, and against thinking a masked madman can be judge, jury, and executioner in a functioning civilization.

The ICE list, which is assembled from reports and documented cases, counted 68 deaths in ICE or CBP custody between January of 2025 and October of 2026. Four people have been shot by traffic stops by ICE in the last year alone. So roughly 59 deaths per 100,000 workforce-years for ICE, compared to roughly 2.2 homicides per year for undocumented immigrants. Almost a 30X higher rate.

A lot of these numbers would have to be WAY off to think undocumented immigrants are more dangerous than ICE. You’d also have to be insane to think a masked, armed mob should be shooting people for civil violations, while also supporting a president convicted of more than 30 felonies and sexual assault. Like, seriously crazy. Fucking bonkers, even.

The number of actual deaths caused by inhumane immigration enforcement is likely much higher. Women are getting pregnant in detention. The only men around them are guards. People are dying who are not getting reported, including US citizens who are being sent to countries they’ve never been to before. Children are sitting in courtrooms by themselves. Families are being ripped apart. Supporting ICE is supporting rape, murder, and the destruction of households. It’s the most inhumane thing we are currently doing, the least Christ-like, and you are in a demented, evil cult if you are unable to see any of this.

By the way, do you know what the definition of a concentration camp is? A concentration camp is a prison or facility where a government or military detains civilians, political prisoners, or targeted demographic groups without trial, usually under harsh conditions.

I’m not sorry if any of this hurts your feelings. Be better.

  1. A declaration of a cause which impels us towards separation???

    1. Consider ICE agents like more complex neutrophils. If the immune response becomes poorly regulated and/or chronic, neutrophilic action gets real messy, real quick. Bottom line is that Fed policy of open borders went on for so long that this violent response is a horrific lesson teaching us what the common denominator for all governments is. If I was offered a spot in a Silo venture, I would accept given what
I’ve observed during and post Covid. Lookup ECDO theory to inspire future stories.

  2. Hugh, I’ve been on daca in US for a while now. My wife is a Brazilian immigrant. We have a boy. Some years back a crazy maga guy tried to kill us because we are immigrants, assaulted me with a metal pipe. After we moved from there, the horrors begun with ice. It’s been very stressful. Bottom line is, as a fellow writer, and human being, it’s really important when people like you speak up, thank you.

  3. Unbelievable that we still have this criminal administration in charge. I fear for us all.

    1. Jocelyn Nungaray, 12 years old gang raped and murdered by two men here illegally from Venezuela. Google it, at least you admit you support 12 year olds being raped and murdered

  4. thank you as always, Hugh, for using your voice & platform for this issue. the slow creep of fascism is quickening; you always think it won’t happen to you, it will happen to “others”, until it is knocking on your own door or shoots you in the middle of a parking lot.

you really nailed it: “This is a rant against racism, against treating civil violations as felonies, and against thinking a masked madman can be judge, jury, and executioner in a functioning civilization.”
my husband is an US immigrant and back in his home country of Australia, he says that immigrant issues are a bureaucratic issue, not one where people with guns & “authority” get to decide if you get to live or die. Let alone the horrific conditions where people are being locked up or even worse, deported to a country that they’ve never even stepped foot in. WHAT ARE WE DOING???

Just remember, you have more in common with the immigrant who comes to America for a better life, the person who cleans your hotel rooms, cooks your food at restaurant, sorts your trash, slaughters the animals for you to eat, or any other number of grunt, back breaking, low paying jobs, than you do with any pathetic billionaire who is hoarding their wealth, effectively stealing your wealth from you due to 40 years of stagnant wages & them paying next to nothing in taxes. please I am begging everyone to remember that. They’re not stealing your jobs, billionaires and the Epstein class are.

    Yes and yes and yes.

Thank you for going through the math and sharing facts. I have not always been proud of the actions of my country, but I have never been quite so ashamed and horrified.

Cue the folks who are going to chastise you for being “political,” and refuse to read your books or watch SILO anymore.

    Good riddance.

As a renounced, former American, I have to say there is no way I could think of returning to visit with such an unruly and unconstitutional police force like ICE running free. It is shameful that so few speak up and even more shameful how much of the population doesn’t care!

The upcoming midterm elections will be a pivotal point. Do people come out and vote out do ⅓ of eligible voters stay at home? If they do go out and vote do their votes get manipulated like they have now shown happened in 2024? And if their is blatant manipulation will anyone stand up or will they simply say “oh well, what can we do?”

With a Gestapo like police force that ICE is, the USA is no longer the land of the free!

  7. Mr. H.,

I was really into your writing until I read the above.
    Actors act
    Authors write
    LEOs enforce existing laws
    Governors govern
    Farmers farm
    Educators educate

Stick to what you’re really good at.

I gave all my Silo books to a liberal friend, delete them from my devices, removed them from Apple TV.

At least your comment did not get deleted or censored outright – unlike mine. Maybe Mr Howey had an especially libertarian day yesterday?

  8. Douglas,

People need to speak up when the situation calls for it, regardless of their profession. Writers are communicators, and he’s communicating something terrible that is happening in this country.

And as for your use of false equivalence & tautology, it only makes you look like you’re not good at understanding what people can and should do in this world.

More so, it makes you literally complicit with evil by defending ICE’s actions. It always perplexes me how people can get so hateful and spiteful against others they’ve never met.

  9. Hugh,

hats off to you for publicly expressing your—possibly unpopular—opinion (facts, rather…).

Quoting from above: “Authors write.” Yes, they do. But no one said they’re only allowed to write fiction. Sometimes things happening in the real world are more important.

Personally, I never understood why mankind needs to be so horribly self-destructive, taking a pencil and drawing artificial lines on that small globe _we all_ live on, calling them “borders” and fighting about them with their _lives_. Just imagine … under different circumstances, the guy on the other side of the fence could possibly be your best friend, and now you’re gonna say “Sorry, I have to shoot you dead.” Leaving his family without a husband, father, son… It could be you.

We’re _all_ Terrans, living on this little third planet from the sun. Shouldn’t we instead try making it a better place to live on? Help each other out? Be supportive, friends even?

The moon we look at is the same for all of us. Sadly, Earth isn’t.

    Thanks for reading.

    1. Well said. The conceptual evolution of property needs work. Found it interesting that Jefferson switched out property and replaced it with happiness. Hmmm. Pareto’s observations about the tendency towards concentration of wealth remains a critically important issue for our kind. I get the sense that the current crop of our “vital few” rulers has dissipated to the point they can longer experience love in their hearts.

  11. Thank you for writing this Hugh. It’s difficult to stand up for common sense and humanity when those things no longer seem to have a shared meaning depending on what polarized “tribe” one professes to belong to. Progressives will attack you for having a nuanced, forward-thinking perspective on A.I., and now MAGA will hate you for expressing a rational and humane view on immigration. Please know that there are many of us out here who don’t follow a “cult of personality” either,
and just want some sanity to prevail before more people get hurt. At the end of the day it only benefits the 0.1% class to have the rest of us at each other’s throats over artificial scarcity and “blood affinity.” For all those insisting you should “shut up and write,” well, isn’t that a contradiction in terms? To write one’s honest thoughts about what it means to be human — and what happens when “categories” of humans are excluded as a precondition for being abused and brutalized — necessitates *not* shutting up in the first place. So, please continue writing, and don’t ever shut up. We know what happened in history before when “no one was left to speak out” because everyone one by one was silenced and disappeared.

    1. The 0.1% are so high on ai that they’ve lost their minds. Billionaire bunkers don’t save humanity, sobriety does. A lesson our sun and stars repeat for us over and over again. Wonder if Hugh is aware of ECDO theory?

  12. Nice article, especially the part about consistency. I really enjoy this kind of content, hope you share more like this.

  13. Yeah, yeah, ICE bad. But even if you hate ICE, would it not be more interesting to compare killing rates per work hour of ICE agents on duty to the killing rates of the thugs and enforcers and hitmen that illegal immigrant gangs employ?

You are so drunk on hating ICE and on your self-righteous moral superiority that you do not even notice how silly it is to compare a statistic of particular US government law enforcers per hour on duty to the same statistic of a very broad population group.

    1. Howey is scum, it’s easy to pretend all is well when your rich and living in an ivory tower, like most of the rich liberal elite do.

  14. Jocelyn Nungaray, 12 years old gang raped and murdered by two men here illegally from Venezuela. Will not be buying any of your books again. France is burning, they just let everyone in, and they burned it to the ground. Laken Riley another college girl murdered by guess what, undocumented imigrants.

  15. I am aware that the current issue of illegal aliens in the US is a crisis in which certain factions in our country, those who wish to defeat us from within, are taking advantage of to drive a wedge between citizens. ‘United We Stand, Divided We Fall’

I do NOT claim to be Republican, or Democrat.  I refer to myself as a ‘Conservative’.  By that I mean that I believe in being responsible and following our laws, even if I don’t agree with them.  I also do not believe that anyone who has broken a law should be rewarded.  We have a process so that people can legally immigrate into our country.  Those who choose not to follow that process are criminals and should be deported.  We would not have this crisis if we refused to reward those who came here illegally.  If you believe that ICE should be disbanded and these criminals allowed to roam free in our county, then I’m certain you want ALL laws revoked and ALL our law enforcement agencies dissolved.

In most other countries, you are jailed for entering illegally.  We have created the fertile soil for this crisis by handing out benefits paid for by hard-working law-abiding tax paying citizens.  In my opinion, any person working for the government who authorized or distributed these benefits to criminals is guilty of Treason.  Plain and Simple……

Did you support the opening of our borders that allowed the millions of illegals to enter??????

    I certainly didn’t.

What is the purpose of having a country defined by borders if you refuse to defend them?  Might as well dissolve the country and declare it nonexistent.  You can’t pick and choose who to allow to enter the country illegally….  That is absurd. Do you think we should look the other way when Muslim extremists flood our country to initiate a Jihad against innocent American Citizens?   Should we stop seizing drugs at the border?  Do you have any idea how much money we could save in HealthCare costs if we eliminated the cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl entering our country, not to mention the number of deaths due to overdosing on those drugs?

Quite simply, your article makes no sense, and like others posting here, I WILL NEVER purchase any of your products again.

  16. Dear Randy,

Are you aware that the legal pathways have been underfunded and and understaffed, and more so, the Trump admin is deporting legitimate asylum seekers and others who should qualify for legal entry.

And your concern about Muslim jihadists is cute, but the real religious terrorists are calling from inside the building: Christofascists and White Nationalists are the real threat to our democracy.

And your concern about the drug war is so very cute — the DEA’s budget is flush and yet we still have a drug problem. I wonder why? Do you know why there’s a War on Drugs? It isn’t to protect people, it’s to give license to oppress people. Watch a video of the police busting somebody on drugs and note the contempt they operate with — are they arresting them because they’re worried about their health? Do you know who funded the Cartels? America did, because people will use drugs and if you make them illegal you are not solving the problem, you’re just manufacturing crime.

You probably don’t have any interest in history or foreign affairs, but the US has been actively destabilizing and messing in the affairs of our southern neighbors for over 100 years. Those brown people trying to get in are trying to escape from the mess we made down there. I like to call it the “You broke it, you bought it” policy.

And last but not least, your reply had zero relation to what Mr. Howey was trying to convey — that ICE causes more problems than it solves. And more so, if you think all those they’ve killed deserved it, then you should look in the mirror to find the monsters among us.

  17. I left a rationale rebuttal to this blog post three days ago which has not been published.

Instead, a number of inflammatory posts from other people have been published.

    What gives?

  18. Hugh, I respect you and appreciate your thinking, but I think your post has some serious flaws.

    1) Wrong comparison group. ICE agents do law enforcement full-time: armed confrontations, arrests, holding people against their will. Undocumented immigrants are mostly civilians doing ordinary jobs. That’s like comparing dog bites received by Animal Control officers and school teachers, and concluding teachers must be better with dogs. The fair benchmark is other police. By workforce size, US police kill people by gunfire at roughly 5–8 times the rate of federal immigration agents.

    2) Convictions vs. every death in custody. On the immigrant side you counted murder convictions, a high bar. On the ICE side you counted all 68 deaths in ICE or CBP custody, including heart attacks, illness, and suicide. Those deaths may reflect neglect worth criticizing, but they aren’t killings by agents. You said you chose every number to favor the other side. Pairing the strictest count against the broadest one does the opposite.

    3) Wrong denominator. Custody deaths scale with how many people are held, not how many staff there are. By your method, any jail or nursing home looks deadly per employee. Measured per person detained, ICE detention runs about 58 deaths per 100,000 a year, versus about 167 in local jails and 274 in state prisons.

None of this puts immigration enforcement above criticism. Detention deaths have risen with the detained population, and there are real questions about medical care and oversight. But the claim that an ICE agent is 30 times more dangerous than an undocumented immigrant doesn’t survive the numbers, and when it falls apart this easily, it gives people an easy reason to dismiss the rest of what you said.

    =====

One more thing, only tangentially related.

Hugh, I think you have a blind spot when it comes to othering people you disagree with politically. I’ve noticed it in other articles too. This one gave me the impression that you see anyone against illegal immigration as racist, without much room for people who simply want an organized immigration system.

I feel like you’re often arguing against a strawman that represents only the most extreme people on social media. Racists certainly exist, but they’re nowhere near as numerous as the people who have a reasoned, rational problem with illegal immigration.

I hope you read this in the honest goodwill it was intended.

    1. Very well reasoned and written. Agree 100%.

  19. to be clear I don’t support ICE or USA immigration policy.

But counter argument: ICE is a governmental agency and required to disclose shots fired, deaths, etc. People on the other-hand do not disclose shootings and killings.

So, assuming a population of 16 million migrants and applying the national U.S. murder rate of 4.1 per 100,000 residents pro-rata, the expected number of murders would be 656 per year or about 10x ICE.

  20. 300 annual homicide convictions attributable to undocumented immigrants versus 68 deaths associated with ICE/CBP over nearly 22 months, but the title of the article is “ICE Kills More Americans Than Illegal Immigrants”…what.

Also, you’re comparing murder convictions with deaths in ICE custody which aren’t even the same thing (e.g., someone detained has a stroke or heart attack in the middle of the night).

  21. What strikes me most is how quickly discussions about immigration turn into arguments where nobody seems willing to listen anymore. Behind every headline, there are real people and families affected by these decisions. I wish more conversations focused on their experiences instead of just political disagreements.

  22. I wonder how much of this information would even reach the public without independent journalists digging into it. Transparency shouldn’t depend on which political party is in power. Are there any publicly available reports showing how these incidents are investigated?

  23. Good article, especially the way you explained it. I enjoy this type of content, hope you write more like this.

  24. The information about 1 BHK flats in Nalasopara helped us explore homes that matched our requirements.
