    This is Only the Beginning

    This is Only the Beginning

I want you to do me a favor and watch these two trailers for the same film: I know which one I like better. The first trailer captures the mood, while the second tries to give us the plot. As someone who now avoids movie trailers, because I’d rather watch the 120 minute version of… Continue reading

    The Scaffolding

    The Scaffolding

I’ll never forget where I was sitting, and what I was thinking, when I first felt pity — rather than anger — for a bigot. This was back at the College of Charleston. I was head over heels for a girl named Kim at the time, and we would hang out at her place or in… Continue reading

    Like Unto Children

    Like Unto Children

Terminator, The Matrix, Ex Machina, Robocop, I, Robot, 2001, A Space Odyssey. They all follow the formula of: Man makes machine, machine destroys man. It’s a sci-fi trope. But what if we’re wrong about how we will feel about our creations? I have a feeling it might go much differently. I think mankind will one day… Continue reading

Art, Science, and the Future of Work

Art, Science, and the Future of Work

Almost all technological and scientific progress is inevitable. New discoveries become possible due to the foundation of prior discoveries (and technologies). New technologies becomes possible due to the foundation of prior technologies (and discoveries). Both theory and experiment seem to find a time in which to emerge. They are buried things, and our thinking and tinkering… Continue reading

    Who I Am

    Who I Am

I don’t think people change much. We change a little over time, but probably not as much nor as easily as we would like. We have our personalities, which our parents see early on, and we seem to carry these personalities right to the grave. That’s not to say our accumulation of knowledge and experiences… Continue reading

Just when I thought this sunset sail couldn't get any better... Anchored off the most beautiful beach in Martinique for a few nights. Set up camp on the sand for the day. Absolute paradise. This is our favorite anchorage in Martinique. Never seen another boat here, just tons of wildlife. Lots of birds, the best coral in the Caribbean, and sea critters galore. Just today we swam with rays, turtles, eels, and dozens of species of fish. Right from the boat! I grew up on a farm in North Carolina reading physics books from the local library, wishing I had someone, anyone, to talk to about the wild universe we inhabit. The best thing to come from my sci-fi career is that I get to surround myself with like-minded, curious people. Dinner with a few friends... Life gets easy when you find your person.
