It was today that I found out just how much I’ve contributed to various LLMs. If you hate the way AI writing sounds, you’ll probably hate my books. And the whole em dash thing is seriously my fault.

My mother was an author and 17 of her books were ingested by Anthropic for building their models. We received word after they lost a class action lawsuit that we’re entitled to a non-trivial amount of money from the judgement. I’m not sure if the other companies have been sued, but I assume they may have been. I know my mother would NOT have been happy about any of her work being used that way and you shouldn’t be either. Talk to your lawyer.

Do you personally feel a fiction author and nonfiction author would be owed the same renumeration? Or do you feel either would be due more? Assuming fiction usually sells more but nonfiction is probably (let’s hope) far more used than fiction for things other than ‘just’ training for writing style, inflection, etc? Isn’t the value of fiction largely more perceived differently by each reader? More emotional? Does that not remove in a way ‘value’ compared to how the genuine personal output of a novel as it is processed is heuristically never the same (and differs greatly, not just a little, like with nonfiction) between two people? Your advances are generally larger and excepting quotes you are also far less plagiarized.

I love your work. I love em dashes. I ran some of my old work, from back before AI was even a thing, through AI detection programs just to see if they’re honest. I’ve gotten results saying the work contained substantial AI text, and that’s absolute cr@p.
IMHO, companies are now targeting writers/authors for sales of yet another must-have product to protect yourself from bullsh*t extortion attempts.
I know I wrote it. The results are self-justifying.

My wife took some of my novels and ran them through detectors and they came back 100% AI.

Crazy. I mean, seems like they could hardly ding you for things like periods and question marks, which everybody uses. And shouldn’t we humans get credit for inventing words and coming up with the concept of stories in the first place?

I love a good em dash! Back in high school, when I was the chair of the brand new literary magazine – everything was brand new, because it was a new school – we submitted our writing anonymously. But the other kids on the selection committee told me they always knew when a story was mine, because I used em dashes…
