Sao Paulo Book Fair

It’s day two of the Sao Paulo Book Fair here in Brazil. This is everything book festivals should be in the US. It runs until 10pm at night, so people can come after work (and so cocktail parties can break out in the convention hall). Kids are brought in by the busload and run around with book highs. It’s a consumer-oriented show, but plenty of business is conducted amid the throngs. Just a ton of literary excitement. For those bemoaning the slide of BEA toward a more reader-centric show, I say go get a boardroom. This rocks.

  1. Well, I think it’s a good sign of a possible trend in that direction when the BEA business-only show loses a full day to BookCon 2015.

  2. It sounds like you’re having a great time, Hugh! You deserve it!

    It’s a shame that book fairs don’t generate as much enthusiasm here in the States. {sigh}

  3. Sounds awesome-almost makes me want to start a book fair in my hometown. it’s in Los Angeles and every year we do hold a music festival that attracts 20-40,000. Hmm, suddenly seems viable

  4. About 150,000 people will come through this fair. It’s madness, in the best way possible.

  5. Hi, Hugh!

    It’s awesome that you had that impression of our book fair here in Brazil.

    I met you yesterday on the bloggers meeting of your brazilian publisher, Intrínseca,
    and it was amazing! I was the one who asked about the feedback of writing piece by piece on the Internet and gave to you a bookmark :P

    Wow, I didn’t know about that difference between these book fairs. We admire so much the eloquence, opportunities and variations of the US’ book market, but I’d never thought about that kind of events as a problem or something like that. Anyway, I hope you’ll carry some of our booklove to everyone else at your country.

    Btw, just bought WOOL and I can’t wait to read and review it.

    Best wishes, and please come back one day!

  6. Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add to my blog that automatically tweet
    my newest twitter updates. I’ve been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some experience with
    something like this. Please let me know if you run into anything.

    I truly enjoy reading your blog and I look
    forward to your new updates.
