Seattle — Slate Magazine — AWP

I’m in Seattle for the Association of Writers and Writing Programs. If you want to come join us, Slate Magazine is having me on for their Audio Book Club tonight (Thursday) at 7:30. Doors open at 6:30. This is a live taping of their book review podcast. We’re discussing Kurt Vonnegut’s SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE.

Tomorrow (Friday), I have a panel at 1:30. Lawrence Block is on the panel, who wrote the fantastic novel HIT MAN and the Matthew Scudder books. I love his work. Gonna be hard not to fanboy all over him.

Other than that, I’ll be wandering around AWP, sitting in on interesting panels, and meeting new people.

  1. Perhaps you can ask the other writers what they think of ACX cutting royalties to a flat 40% for audiobooks–for works they don’t pay to produce or otherwise add any value to other than downloading and payment processing.

Also, that mega-screen in China, the one you posted with the sunset was a bit sensationalized by the internets. That screen’s purpose isn’t to show sunsets due to low visibility caused by pollution, but to advertise. The sunset is just part of an advertisement that plays on that screen and the photographer took a picture of it and took it out of context.

  3. Hugh,
It was great to meet you at AWP. It seemed like you were really enjoying yourself there, too. Thanks for paying it forward with all the things you are doing.

  4. Hugh,
I got a real boost from the AWP panel you were on, and the Amazon self-publishing panel where we spoke a second time. Thanks for telling it straight and positively to authors and leading by example. I was hesitating to self-publish my suspense novel, Corporate Insanity, but now the process seems so much more predictable and manageable than queering agents. I hope we’ll meet again.
