The Next Anthology

My second anthology since MACHINE LEARNING will come out this year. Only a few of the stories have been published elsewhere. The rest are stories written since I’ve been on LUNA (the goal has been a story a week, but it’s been more like every other week).

While my editor is working on them, and I’m polishing up the last few, I’m debating how best to release these. They will definitely be a collected work at some point, but I was thinking of releasing them individually as short stories as well. Maybe even making little chapbooks out of them.

There are a ton of new options out there. Substack, this blog, etc. Part of the joy of releasing them separately is the chance to package each one with its own cover art and have them stand alone. Amazon will only let prices be as low as 99 cents. Is that too much for a short story? Any opinions are welcomed.

Edited to add: OH MY GOODNESS! Machine Learning is only $6.99 on Kindle. That’s insane. Looking at what I’ve put into this anthology, and the years of work that went into Machine Learning, that’s gotta be the best dollar-to-blood ratio in publishing. You should grab a copy. Some of my absolute best work is in there.

  1. I’d pay 99 cents. Love the idea of each having its own cover art.

  2. I think 99 cents is fair value for a (guaranteed to be) good short story.

  3. I’d gladly pay 99 cents for a story . Seems like a bargain. Looking forward to your new work, however it’s published!

  4. Did you mean that this will be your first collection since Machine Learning or that you have a collection I don’t know about? ISFDB shows Machine Learning as your only collection.

    1. Yeah, this is a new and upcoming one. Based on the first few comments here, what I might do is set up a weekly release of the stories, with the full anthology to follow. Friday afternoon release, so there’s something to read over the weekend? Do this for fifteen weeks and then release the full book?

  5. What exciting news. I would definitely pay 99 cents.

  6. I found the Silo series relatively early on and enjoyed it tremendously. I also very much enjoyed your first anthology plus the Sand series. I need to revisit Molly Fyde l (sp?) now that I’ve read your blog especially since I own the first one!

All this to say, let us know wherever you publish and I’ll figure it out. I would pay 0.99 cents on Amazon but would prefer to buy the collection once released.

    99 cents is fine!!!

  8. Stand alone or complete collection – either way I’m in! If it’s your stories, it’s pretty much guaranteed to be stories I’d love. Very much looking forward to this!

No worries about paying 99 cents. Once you’ve listed a few, you can make them free by offering them at zero cost on sites other than Amazon, and ‘Zon will match that price. But you probably know that already.

You could also share with readers that you’re donating the money you earn on these individual stories to some good cause–a fund that works on cleaning up the ocean?

In any case, everyone will be excited that you have new work out, and those stories will fly off the figurative shelves. Looking forward to reading them!
