The End of Privacy and Capitalism

The End of Privacy and Capitalism

Privacy and capitalism both need to come to an end. Both will come to an end, if we’re lucky. Which should piss off just about everyone reading this. Those on the right will scream that capitalism is the best thing that ever happened to us, while agreeing that cops should perhaps bust down more doors and invade… Continue reading

    The Birth of Artificial Intelligence

    The Birth of Artificial Intelligence

Google’s AI AlphaGo beat the undisputed world Go champ 4-1 this week. While this won’t grab the headlines that IBM did with beating Kasparov at chess or Jennings at Jeopardy, it’s a more amazing result than either of those previous accomplishments. The nature of the game of Go, and the nature of the solutions required for… Continue reading

    My Bias (again)

    My Bias (again)

When Data Guy and I put the first Author Earnings reports together, transparency was our primary goal. I think it’s because we’re both scientists at heart, but also because we are both children of the open-source, crowd-sourced, wiki generation. In addition to our complete transparency on methodology, and our sharing of the source data so others could… Continue reading

    Assume the Best About People

    Assume the Best About People

I learned something important watching the Superbowl this past Sunday (and not that defense wins championships, though it appears they do). What I learned came in the aftermath, as we collectively went crazy assuming the very worst about two quarterbacks. We seem to do this, assume the worst about people, when we could just as easily assume… Continue reading

Authors: Take Control of Book Prices

Authors: Take Control of Book Prices

This week, AuthorEarnings.com turned 2 years old. To celebrate, we released our latest quarterly report on Kindle ebook income.* We also looked at print and audio in this report, something we will be tracking in the future. Also, Data Guy revamped our methodology to double-check our previous work. Turns out the old methodology was spot-on when it comes… Continue reading

Just when I thought this sunset sail couldn't get any better... Anchored off the most beautiful beach in Martinique for a few nights. Set up camp on the sand for the day. Absolute paradise. This is our favorite anchorage in Martinique. Never seen another boat here, just tons of wildlife. Lots of birds, the best coral in the Caribbean, and sea critters galore. Just today we swam with rays, turtles, eels, and dozens of species of fish. Right from the boat! I grew up on a farm in North Carolina reading physics books from the local library, wishing I had someone, anyone, to talk to about the wild universe we inhabit. The best thing to come from my sci-fi career is that I get to surround myself with like-minded, curious people. Dinner with a few friends... Life gets easy when you find your person.
