Season Three – Episode Ten

The finale of SILO season three lands tomorrow night on AppleTV (Thursday at 9pm Eastern). I’ve watched this episode four times already. There aren’t many episodes of TV that’ve ever made me want to do that. I’m already itching to watch it again.

I have a difficult time praising things I create myself, like my books or short stories. It’s a lot easier to rave about the TV show because it’s the creation of so many talented people I admire. The cast and crew of SILO are off-the-charts brilliant, and what they’ve done with this season blows me away. All of that is to say that it’s slightly painful to suggest that this may be a perfect TV episode you’re about to watch. Frame-by-frame perfection.

I’m looking forward to discussing with folks after. If you’re like me and you watch a second time, I recommend keeping an eye on the individual acting performances. There are a few cast members in this episode that are beyond astounding. Seriously, I can’t hype this up enough. You all are in for a wild, wild ride.

    It’s been an extraordinary ride to follow what you have done with SILO for television. While diverging from the book series, it’s blossomed in a way that not only allows readers/watchers to reexperience this world and these characters, but takes into account developments that have occurred since the books were written.

    I think this series will stand the test of time and the audience will continue to grow. Rarely has the screen given us such an intense encapsulation of humanity’s choices when at an existential crossroads.

    As we are right now in the “real” world.

    And to think that it started with a little short story…

      You’re not wrong. We are truly at an existential crossroads and my fear is that 1/2 of America doesn’t think so. That said, Episode 10 of Season 3 was the best episode of tv I’ve ever seen and I’m 66 years old and have been reading sci fi since age 10. I’m even more excited to find out what new books are in the offing and how to get my grubby hands on them. I like reading science fiction books the mimic our current situation or what’s possible in the future….keep it up please!

    I’m actually worried….EP9 ended with two cliffhangers?
    The best thing about the whole series has been so much foreshadowing, and little bits and pieces that repeated viewings catch…..

    I’ve read the book trilogy 2x and am a huge fan of the show. I do indeed hope we get some answers to the biggest burning questions in the finale. What has Mechanical been up to and where does it lead is my primary question!

    I’m a huge Howey books fan….!!!

    My inlaws own apple products so i did watch the first season when they had a subscription. I read the silo books and some of your sand series and apple did a great job but i dont like streaming because its too unstable. i.e. swapping shows out. Are there plans for a dvd release?

    I’m so excited! I’ve read the books but what I really appreciate about the TV show is that there are just enough details changed that it still keeps me on my toes! From the books to the show I’ve been absolutely enthralled. I’ve written pages full of similarities & differences between the books and the show. As well as notes full of comments, theories, & predictions about what’s to come in the show. I could not be more excited. Thank you so much Hugh for building this world for us to get lost in.

    Finished up S3E10 45 minutes ago, started right at 2100EST, WOW, it truly was perfect. Your books have been the catalyst for my favorite show of all time. I’m starting Wool tomorrow and cannot wait, I know I’ll feel the same about your books.

    Cheers and well done, you are so humble in your blogs but us fans know with you, none of this would exist.

    Here waiting for your thoughts on Episode 10! What an incredible finale.

    I finished the entire Silo trilogy in just a few days after Season 2 ended because I simply couldn’t live with not knowing what happened next. And somehow, even after reading all three books and knowing the story, the series still manages to surprise me. That says so much about both the brilliance of the original work and the care that has gone into adapting it.

    What fascinates me most about Silo is how incredibly complete the world feels. The mystery pulls you in, but underneath it there are so many layers! human nature, fear, power, truth, memory, freedom, and the lengths people will go to in order to survive or control what others believe. It is such intelligent storytelling.

    I once heard the beautiful idea that great writers can sometimes tap into G-d’s mind. Into possibilities, worlds or realities that somehow already exist beyond us. I don’t know whether that is true, but Silo genuinely gave me that feeling. The universe is so coherent, detailed and alive that it almost feels less like something you invented and more like somewhere you discovered.

    I’m honestly a little heartbroken that we have to wait until 2027 to see the story continue on screen, but what a privilege it has been to experience it first through the series and then through the books.

    Thank you for creating this extraordinary universe. Silo is one of those stories that stays in your mind long after you’ve finished it.

    Hugh,
    Congrats on another amazing season of Silo. I was not disappointed with the finale and loved (hated) where we were left at the end.

    The constant theme of memory loss was used well despite the tragic exchange between siblings who had no idea that was the case. I was also sad to miss Helen (or whatever name she ends up with) in this episode but given that it happens 300+ years after her death, it’s understandable.

    Now we wait…

    I watched the finale 3x last night, and the season 4 preview 4x this morning. Mind Blown.

    Hugh, are there any followup books to the trilogy you suggest would help me/us get through the agonizing year we must wait for Season 4?

      Have you tried the short stories?
      the three short stories were originally released in The Apocalypse Triptych. To be more specific:

      In the Air was previously published in The End is Nigh.
      In the Mountains was previously published in The End is Now.
      In the Woods was previously published in The End Has Come.

        I feel so lucky, wet I ordered the three books from Amazon I go the Silo Stories in the box set, and they finished up Nichol’s tale and the ending really nicely …the end of Dust is really a cliff hanger, In the woods was on some ways tragic, but you and the story moved on….so, a fifth season ?

    there’s a theme running through the TV series that I wonder will continues, like when Harwood expresses his frustration that his daughter didn’t become shadow because of where she’s from, the Penbrooks say the same thing about making the wool, and Juliette when she’s brought up from the down deep to the mid’s? to become sheriff and is told ‘I don’t know what you people eat?…….a fallacy about free will maybe?

    From an European point of view …. I have some questions in mind that I hardly understand.
    The Tv series diverges in many aspects from the original books, but this is acceptable as the result is any case logical and coherent with writer’s idea.
    What sounds weird to me is why Tv productions seems to be forced to insert in the plot some gay/lesbian relationship.
    Even if in original books they simply don’t exist.
    Is the LGBTQ+ lobby so influent and strong to force this non-original change in the story ?
    I have no problem with that, just wondering if someone else think that this is a useless, not requested , enforced upheaval of the original work.

    it’s a part of our world now, so why wouldn’t be in the Silos? I am tired of this line of critique, people are commenting that they don’t like Common because they think he has an accent? … if you’re offended don’t watch

    I can’t wait for the 4th season. So I just got the books and I’m reading every day since. I watched the first season when it came out, but I didn’t know it was a novel first. Some 15 years ago I read like every classic worth the while.. from Dostojewski to Faulkner to Shakespeare, McCarthy, Camus, Kafka.. nearly 300 books in one year.. I’ve read The Road at least five times and every Dostojewski at least twice. And suddenly it was pretty hard to find something I could read at all. All just full of sound an fury. Two years ago I enjoyed the Southern Reach Series. (I loved science fiction as a kid). Bought and read The Living Dead for nostalgia. I just wanted to say thank you for giving me something that I love to read.

      Years ago I got my hands on a copy of Absalom, Absalom! Was kinda hard to get. I save that one for the end ;D
