Have you heard what some publishers are considering? They want to delay publication of ebooks until after their physical copies (read: hardbacks) have been on the market for a month or more. That means you early adopters get sloppy seconds (yeah, e-book formatting gets real sloppy compared to the nice, neat layout of print material).
This seems crazy to me. The goal is to get people reading your words; and e-books offer convenience, benefits to the environment, and portability not shared by physical books. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ll always have a fetish for a nice hardback, but some people enjoy their digital versions and I think it’s wrong to tease them by withholding what they want.
(Okay, this post just crossed from PG to PG-13 with all those double entendres)
What really makes no sense is the digital versions can go up mere moments after the files have been submitted to the printer. Early adopters can be rewarded for their enthusiasm (and the initial cost of entry). So why not let them have it? Early and often?
That’s why I’m bucking this trend. For those of you that can’t wait to see what happens next in the Molly Fyde saga, book two is now available in several e-formats (ePub, Mobi, Kindle, LRF for Sony, PDB for Palm/PC/Mac).
The best place to snag a copy is Smashwords. Here’s the book’s page: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/7975
You can even read it in your browser on any computer you own (and the first fifth of the book is free to sample!). Once you buy a copy at the low, low price of $6.99, you own all the formats. At least, I’m pretty sure that’s how it works. Leave a comment if I have it wrong.
It should also be up on the Kindle store and Sony’s Reader store in the next week or so. There’s several other places to host it, so I’ll start looking into them as well (my editor has something called a Nook that I’ll need to look into).
Oh, and if you know any of your friends that have these devices, point them in the direction of the book. They can also find the first entry, MOLLY FYDE AND THE PARSONA RESCUE, at OmniLit: http://www.omnilit.com/product-mollyfydeandtheparsonarescue-395914-245.html
